Should You Buy a Certified Pre-owned Vehicle?
Want a like-new car at a used-car price? Consider a certified pre-owned vehicle. These low-mileage used cars—no more than four to six years old—come with a variety new-car perks.

What You Get
While CPO programs vary by manufacturer, they typically include the following:

A detailed vehicle inspection—A car may go through as many as 300 checkpoints before it's certified.
An extended warranty—The warranty may allow for the continuation of any remaining new-car warranty, may be bumper-to-bumper or only powertrain, and will typically include a deductible for warranty work.
Special features—Additional CPO benefits may include emergency roadside service, rental car assistance when the vehicle is being repaired, and financing or leasing options.

What It Costs
The cost of the certification and the extended warranty are built into the cost of the vehicle. Expect to pay anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 more for a CPO auto.

Is It Worth It?
You can buy an extended warranty with many used vehicles, but you won't get the detailed inspection and other special CPO features. When considering a CPO vehicle, ask for a written document that clearly spells out what's covered by the program. Look carefully at these benefits to determine whether they're worth the CPO markup.
