2010 Ford Edge Review

This 2010 Ford Edge overview explains changes for the model year, provides a summary of the 2010 Edge, and includes Ford Edge safety, reliability, and fuel economy information.

What’s New For 2010?

Ford finds some extra mpg in the Edge’s thirsty powertrain this year, and the Limited model can be equipped with an Interior Appearance Package that includes Sienna leather, dark brushed aluminum trim, and premium floor mats with an embroidered Edge logo. The only other change for 2010 is that the Edge’s Sync information and entertainment system is now available with Traffic, Directions and Information service.

Trim Levels and Features

Ford offers four different versions of the 2010 Edge: SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. Starting with the SE model, every Edge has alloy wheels, dark tinted rear glass, air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power door locks with remote keyless entry, power side mirrors, and power windows. An auxiliary audio input jack is also included, along with floor mats, a cargo management system, and a reclining 60/40-split folding rear seat.

The Edge SEL adds a power driver’s seat, satellite radio, a CD changer, and a reverse sensing system. Fog lights, 18-inch wheels, and an entry keypad stuck to the driver’s door are key visual cues for the SEL, while the interior is decked out in upgraded cloth seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shifter, and an Easy Fold system for the second-row seat. Headlights that come on when the wipers are activated are also standard, along with a trip computer, a compass, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and illuminated visor vanity mirrors.

The Edge Limited gains several upscale touches, including leather, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, Sync hands-free communication and entertainment technology, ambient interior lighting, and an Audiophile sound system. Thanks to the Limited model’s fold-flat power front passenger’s seat, you can carry something eight feet long with the rear hatch closed. Extra chrome trim on the Edge Limited’s exterior helps set it apart from the SEL model, and if you buy the new Interior Appearance Package you’ll get Sienna leather, fancy floor mats, and dark aluminum interior trim.

For the best handling and extra dose of attitude, try the Edge Sport. This model has 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires, smoked lighting elements front and rear, and a body kit to make sure it looks sporty. Inside, ambient interior lighting, Sync, and black leather seats with gray suede inserts are included. Order the optional 22-inch forged and polished wheels, and the Edge Sport comes with a performance suspension and sport-tuned steering. Colors for this model are restricted to Black, Red Candy, Ingot Silver, and Sport Blue.

Ford offers Edge buyers numerous ways to further tailor the SUV to specific tastes, especially is you buy the SEL, Limited, or Sport model. All-wheel-drive is a popular upgrade, and the various Edge models can be equipped with a roof rack, ambient cabin lighting, a HomeLink programmable remote, chrome wheels, and a towing package. Other options include a reverse sensing system, a power tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, and a navigation system.

Under The 2010 Ford Edge’s Hood

Hope you like a 265-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 in your Ford Edge, because that’s the only engine available. A six-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the front wheels, and an optional intelligent all-wheel-drive system is sophisticated enough to automatically apportion power not only between the front and rear wheels but also from side to side.

Ford has made changes to improve the Edge’s fuel economy for 2010. With front-wheel drive, mileage rises by 1 mpg to 18 in the city and 25 on the highway. The gain for the AWD model is better, with city fuel economy rising to 17 mpg from 15 mpg. Highway mileage also jumps, but not as dramatically, reaching 23 mpg this year compared to 22 mpg last year.

Safety and Reliability

Thanks to a comprehensive standard safety package that includes four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, Ford’s AdvanceTrac traction and stability control system with Roll Stability Control (RSC), and six airbags, the 2010 Ford Edge is equipped to provide safe passage. SEL, Limited and Sport models also come with a reverse sensing system that beeps when it detects hidden objects behind the Edge, like a child or pet.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2010 Edge provides 5-Star protection for the driver in a frontal- or side-impact collision, and for the rear passenger in a side-impact collision. Front seat passengers are protected at 4-Star levels in a frontal impact, and the Edge gets a 4-Star rating for its ability to resist rollover.

Last year, the Edge was a Top Safety Pick according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This year, the IIHS requires a top rating in the roof crush strength test, and the Edge doesn’t qualify. However, it does earn the highest rating of Good in the frontal-offset, side-impact, and rear-impact injury prevention tests.

According to both Consumer Reports and J.D. Power and Associates, the 2010 Edge’s predicted reliability scores, um, edge up this year. Each of the market research firms predicts that the 2010 Edge will return slightly better than average reliability over time.

The Vehix View

Though it’s starting to age, we recommend the 2010 Ford Edge. Safety and dependability scores are good enough to reduce concern in these areas, and the midsize crossover SUV is undeniably stylish – much more so than a chief competitor, the Nissan Murano. Plus, the Edge is roomy inside, comfortable, and can be loaded up like a luxury vehicle. If you’re looking for a five-passenger crossover SUV, the Edge deserves consideration.
