The 2007 Ford Freestar goes into its last model year with a single powertrain choice-a 4.2L overhead-valve V6 making 201 horsepower and a class-leading 263 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with a four-speed automatic transmission recently redesigned for shorter, smoother shifts.

All Freestars come with a third-row bench seat that can be folded into a well in the floor, for a flat cargo floor when the third row is not in use. SEL and Limited trims come equipped with a third-row tailgate bench seat that can also be positioned outward for tailgate picnicking.

Special attention has been paid to interior noise and refinement; it's among the quietest of any minivan models, with thick front side windows, a noise-absorbing dashboard panel, and conformable constrained layer damping, a method of blocking road noise.

Four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution are standard across the line, as is a tire pressure warning system. The Safety Canopy side curtain air bag system, which protects all three rows of outboard occupants, is optional, as is AdvanceTrac stability control, which now includes panic brake assist to help apply full braking power in panic stops.

The Freestar is available in three trims: SE, SEL, and Limited. The SE has standard remote keyless entry, air conditioning, a CD sound system, and cruise control, while the SEL includes a tri-zone climate-control system, overhead console, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a power driver's seat, fold-and-tumble second-row seats, a chrome grille, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Limited models include chrome wheels and chrome trim, power sliding side doors, an enhanced overhead console, more lamps and map lights, second-row tumble-down bucket seats, and rear-seat audio controls.

Notable options for the Limited model include a towing package that increases towing capacity to 3,500 pounds, a DVD entertainment system, polished alloy wheels, and a reverse sensing system.

A Cargo Van version of the Freestar, with fewer standard interior amenities, is available on a limited basis.Ford will discontinue the Freestar after the 2007 model year, to be replaced in 2008 by a new vehicle called the Flex. For 2007, the smaller 3.9L engine formerly offered on some of the lineup is no longer available, and a new panic brake assist feature is available with AdvanceTrac. Six of the nine exterior colors available for 2007 are new.Torquey engine for towing and hauling; tailgate seat; optional safety features. The Ford Freestar received a five-star Frontal Crash Test Rating from the NHTSA and a "Good" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 2007. Also, Freestar's 4.2L V6 has the highest torque in its class and is the largest engine available in a minivan, making it a good choice for those who plan to tow. It also has one of the quietest interiors found on a minivan.
