Range Rover Evoque Named 2012 North American Truck of the Year

Posted by Michael Waterman on January 13th, 2012

2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

The Range Rover Evoque turns heads. Lots of them as you glide down the road in this smallest-ever Land Rover. Now the Evoque will turn even more heads since this small crossover was named 2012 North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show held in Detroit, Michigan.

Editor’s Note: The winner of the North American Truck of the Year was chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada who represent magazines, television, radio, newspapers and websites. The three finalists for Truck of the Year were the Range Rover Evoque, Honda CR-V and BMW X3. Read more about the winners and selections at the North American Car of the Year website. The 2011 North American Truck of the Year was the Ford Explorer.

Based on the many passionate, amusing and sometimes ill-informed comments about our coverage of the Hyundai Elantra as North American Car of the Year and skepticism that a Korean brand can accurately be called best North American Car (even though the Elantra is primarily manufactured in Alabama), we’re assuming some readers’ heads may nearly explode when they review the manufacturing specs behind the award-winning Evoque. Here is the parts content information, straight from the Range Rover’s Monroney sticker.

  • U.S./Canadian Parts Content: 1%
  • Major Sources of Foreign Parts Content: United Kingdom: 50%
  • Final Assembly Point: Halewood, United Kingdom
  • Country of Origin: Engine: Spain and Transmission: Japan

Before the “Buy American” fans pile on, remember that today, an American car doesn’t always translate to “Made in America.” While the Ford F-150 is assembled in America with 60% of its parts from North American companies, the Toyota Tundra actually has the highest North American parts content at 80% and is built in San Antonio, Texas. In terms of cars, the Volkswagen Passat is assembled in Tennessee while the Ford Fusion is assembled in Mexico. Today’s vehicles, like business and economics in general, are more global in scope than ever before.

What is most important to remember about the Range Rover Evoque is that this is a strong candidate for one of the best available vehicles in all 160 countries where it is (or will be) sold. Vehix recently spent a week driving the five-door Evoque and found it extremely attractive both inside and out and remarkably smooth to drive. Our full Range Rover Evoque Review provides our impressions in much greater detail, but suffice it to say that the Evoque is a strong player in the very crowded luxury crossover space.

Read: 2012 Range Rover Evoque Review

Our test vehicle topped $50,000 (after $9,000 in options) so we’ll dispel any thoughts that the small size of the Evoque translates into an inexpensive crossover. It’s also not the most powerful small luxury crossover you can buy, losing out to the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, for example, in terms of total horsepower. But it’s definitely the most capable off road. That may not mean much to the average Evoque buyer who may sometimes drive the Evoque on a pothole-filled road or a dirt path on their way to their summer home in the Catskills or Sierra Nevadas. But that off-road capability, coupled with the striking design and tasteful interior, was more than enough to persuade the North American Truck of the Year jurors to give the Evoque the nod over the BMW X3 and Honda CR-V.

What do you think? Is the Evoque a deserving pick? Or would you choose the X3 or CR-V instead? Ponder that question as you peruse the Range Rover Evoque photos below.

  1. abc def says:

Where did you get the idea that the F-150 is assembled in Mexico??? The final assembly plant is Dearborn, MI (which is NOT in Mexico!!). Please do your research before you write stuff…

    • Ron says:

The article doesn’t say the F-150 is assembled in Mexico. Work on your reading comprehension before criticizing.

    • rjainDetroit says:

Read it again. Does not say the F 150 is assembled in Mexico. Do your research before you rant.

    • Grundyboat says:

“While the Ford F-150 is assembled in America with 60% of its parts from North American companies,…..” “The Fusion is assembled in Mexico.” Read three times then comment. Called reading comprehension. Duuhhhhh!

    • vince says:

A truck is a vehicle that has load as well as towing capacity. You can load from any three sides of the vehicle and handle 3/4 ton load with no frame bending or rear axle failures. Also the front wheels stay on the ground. Try putting a thousand pounds in the Range Rover and see your outcomes. To the dealer you will go for repairs.

  2. JOHN says:

dOES NOT LOOK LIKE A TRUCK TO ME UNLESS THEY ARE NOW CLOSING IN THE BED

    • niceun says:

So who gets SUV of the year?????

    • David355 says:

I agree with abc def and John about the selection for 2012
      truck of the year.
Also I would like to know why the foreign junk is always praised and lauded as so wonderful to drive and own????
We need good paying jobs here in the U.S. and we are supposed to support their choice for TOTY?
Does it make any sense to us to build China’s econemy and
inforstructure, this country last time I checked into it was a communist country.
Oh well, I guess there are too many people making millions
on this deal while Americans suffer, tring to make end’s meet.
They also keep shoving this Euro thing at America, to hell
with the Euro thing, the Euro look the Euro vs. the dollar!
At one time not to long ago, the U.S. lead the World in just about every economic category(Auto’s,Agricuture,Steel,etc.,etc.)but Corporate profit’s are more important than common sense and fairness to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Grundyboat says:

I agree a crossover or SUV is not a truck.

    • Joe says:

      My guess is the Mini-Cooper!

  3. Dangrs1 says:

SUV of the year? Maybe. Truck of the year? NO

  4. BARRY Miller says:

    Truck?
These “awards:” are always a joke, aren’t they?

  5. Wes says:

Hello? Where’s the truck? I see an SUV but no truck. Btw, nice looking SUV. Now where’s the truck?

  6. BARRY Miller says:

Hadn’t even noticed till just now.
You state this silly vehicle is a crossover/
By definition, that makes it a CAR.

  7. carlover says:

How in the world is that a truck?? crossover at best but maybe you can call it an suv but where is the truck in that. no truck bed or anything. guess the award givers don’t put much thought into their decisions.

  8. steve says:

I feel that the SUV is not a TRUCK and can not be even cosidered so. If this is a truck then is my ford f-250 an suv?

  9. Mike says:

First you call an SUV a truck, then compare it to an Audi and BMW. WTF planet do you drive on. Create a new category for SUV of the year and leave the truck reviews to someone who knows what a truck is, complete with a bed and tailgate. Waist of real truck drivers time reading this article.

  10. Harold says:

    NOT A TRUCK !!!!! GET REAL…..

  11. Robby says:

If theis is a truck I would love to see it loaded with a load fo firewood.

  12. How much firewood can it haul?

  13. G.Kayea says:

Since when is the United Kingdom considered
    “North America” ???

    • LCG says:

Welcome to modern america folks – CAFE standards make this a truck. Trucks don’t figure into the standard the way cars do so these lovely little toys that no one can afford to operate at 10 mpg, get classified with the trucks.
This is a ‘truck’ in Obamarica only.
Elections have consequences folks. Keep up the good work!

      • Donna Bailey says:

Wow – you managed to bring President Obama into a conversation about the difference between a truck and an SUV….REALLY? I actually agree with your comment about CAFE standards – that’s a good observation…. BUT, it has nothing to do with President Obama. Find a different forum to do your bashing in and keep with the conversation.

      • Harry Neuman says:

Another Right Wing misrepresentation … the rules as to whether a vehicle is classified a truck or a car by The EPA were established over 30 years ago… Well before Obama … and auto manufacturers have been playing with those rules to their advantage ever since. At one time Subaru put a couple of plastic bucket seats with seat belts in the bed of a small pickup truck so it could be imported as a car ( I think it was called the Brat)… I’m sure the first traffic accident that killed someone was also Osama’s fault as well … don’t place blame unless you know what you are talking about

        • tater stick says:

Wait a minute, did you just call Obama Osama? Hey, I don’t care for either one but get your names correct. Unless that’s what you meant to say, then explain how Osama fits in this discussion.
BTW, an SUV is not A truck!!!!

  14. Shawn says:

    It is not a truck!

  15. Christine says:

I’d like to know what average American can afford the pricey Evoque?! Talk about sticker shock!

  16. T.Reed says:

    Really?????????????????

  17. Buzz says:

That’s a lot of dough to spend just to go parkin’ and get some beaver. Just buy a good used Chevy, Ford or Dodge, and you got yourself a sex-gettin’ machine that you won’t spend $50,000 for, or be afraid to get scratched a little. $50,000 for this?!?! Uh,………..yeah.

  18. S. McLaughlin says:

    this is a truck????

  19. ack bak says:

You have a good point John. I believe the F-150 should have been the truck of the year.

  20. It seems to me that Vehix doesn’t like American cars & trucks.A shame that people in this country won’t back their own companys. The japanese are winning the war now.How quick we forget WW11!!

  21. jay says:

abcdef the frame and powertrain are made in mexico. you got one thing right “final” assembly plant. the subassembly’s are trained to michigan where the bodys are attached and the final assembly is performed. so they do have thier research correct. but!!!! dont let that distract us from the real joke here. range rover!!! are you kidding me??? this company never produced a car with any thing aproching quality. and now its owned by tata, the largest producer of wood bodied vehicles in the world lol. give me a break. im a 28 year ase certified master mechanic. when a range rover rolls into my shop i promptly show them the door and the address of the range rover dealer. i also tell them to buy another car so they have someting to drive when thier range rover is in the shop, which will be all the time. bad enough when the brits made them cant imagine how they are with the indians makin em. just my opinion

  22. Skip says:

This is a SUV, not a truck.
Trucks have a bed in the back for real work.

  23. Bill says:

With errors as grave as “Ford’s F-150 is assembled in Mexico” I don’t give any info in this article the least bit of serious consideration.
I own a 2011 F-150 with a rather large green sticker in the lower left corner of the windshield, that states the truck was manufactured at the MI Dearborn plant, just as an earlier post from (abc def) states.
BWT the my F-150 is a damn fine truck and piece of engineering.

    • Godfrey Buquet says:

Hi Bill. I own a 1999 F-150 XLT extended cab with 81,500 miles. I assume it was made in the U S A and that maybe even the chassis was made here in the U S. It is a great truck and the only thing that I am not pleased with is the autolocks on the doors do not always work correctly. I would have had them fixed but my local Ford dealership wanted $438.00, that was 5 years ago, to fix them. That is a little steep to fix the automatic locks on 2 doors, considering I paid $19,000 for the whole damn truck. My truck looks good, rides good, drives good, and with the 5.4 liter engive it has all the power I need and more. We would still build and own the best in the world if almost everyone in our country were not so set on being rich overnight. We pushed ourselves our of business and it is not finished yet. Especially with congress being able to invest in inside trading, which is a crime if any of us do it. I put Ford at the top of the hill when it comes to trucks. been driving them over half a century. I own a GMC and an American Motors vhehicle also. Have no qualms on any of the products.

  24. Robert says:

Looks like an SUV to me….certainly not a truck.

  25. mckenzie says:

Hahaha Wow looks like Range Rover Designers can’t think up their own design. Check out the 2010, 2011, 2012 KIA SOUL Looks exactly the same just a bit longer. Even down to the same rims.

2010 Kia Soul came fully loaded: blue tooth phone, steering wheel audio controls, cruise, on and on there is more for just 16,645. msrp

Oh yeah and 31 miles per gallon.

Are the two companies connected? That would explain it.

  26. Dan the car man says:

That my man is a SUV

  27. SGDP Tech says:

I hate to have to say this, what were these people drinking or smoking when they made this horrendous choice. First of all, IT’S NOT A TRUCK!, second, IT’S NOT MADE IN NORTH AMERICA, and third, IT LOOKS LIKE A MINI PONTIAC AZTEC.
A truck is a truck, is a truck, is a truck, not a crossover suv, not a mini suv.

  28. Debbie says:

I checked this out at our local Car Show – liked most of it but the visibility sucked – side and rear windows – I would consider it a hazard to drive.

  29. Waldron says:

I’m with everyone else this is not a truck. I wouldn’t even consider it a SUV. It is truly what they said it is a crossover vehicle and those awards mean nothing. Why don’t you let the people vote they way it should be. Ha Ha

  30. Jake says:

probably these companies are being paid off by the manufacturers to name the best of the best.

  31. Steve says:

I hope I’m at the garden supply shop when an Evoque owner tells the Bobcat operator to fill up this “truck” with compost!

  32. carl k says:

They ask “What do you think ” I THINK THEY SHOULD OF PICKED A TRUCK !!!!! Lets see how hard this is,, I’m a smart man ( said Forrest Gump !! ) but if you want to pick the best,, then have separate catagories for CARS, SUV, CROSSOVER, and TRUCK !!!! now go back and PICK A TRUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cause this is a CROSSOVER !!!! dumb ass !!

    • Grundyboat says:

By definition a Crossover is not a truck. These writers label something, then define it and then contradict it. Typical.

  33. WILLIAM HILL says:

If you are not ready to run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. Or go buy a Kia.

  34. Dan Man says:

this is such a joke. No payload, you say it tows but an F150 with the 3;73 gears and an Ecoboost (V6) will tow 11,300 lbs…..Truck of The Year here is a joke. Who created the classification here? Someone that doesn’t know what a CAR/SUV/CROSSOVER/TRUCK is. In fact, who told these experts, the vehicles they compared, were trucks?Idiots for sure

  35. Donald Kissinger says:

I totally agree with the majority of the 26 replies (not 29)you received. This thing is as far from a “truck” as a boat is. Explain your catagory selection. It is a good thing you don’t pick bicycle or motorcycle of the year, they would be totally misunderstood. I would start over again, you missed the selection on this one.

  36. Chris Katchum says:

The 2012 Range Rover Evoque is a crossover suv not a truck you freak. SUV of the year – absolutely ! Nice lines, handles well, etc. Do you your research -

  37. Rylo the Red says:

It appears that the author of this article and the people that voted need to do a little research, NO a lot of research before they write articles or vote for trucks of the year. A cross over is NOT a truck! Motor Trend has the right Truck of the Year!

  38. Fordman says:

Where do I hook-up my 14000lb. 5th wheel camper? I wouldn’t want one at half the price!

  39. Dean says:

I’d be willing to bet that the 2012 ford f150 will sell better than 10 to 1

  40. oops says:

Are these the same editors that chose the AMC Renault Alliance as Motor Trends Car of the Year ?

  41. Brian says:

Not a truck. I repeat, NOT A TRUCK!

  42. Mabe Pouncy says:

You people have your head jammed up your ass so far.. it isn’t funny. Truck of the year….

  43. tom says:

1% made in North America and some jackoff names it North American car of the year. WTF! It’s not even a truck but it’s a hell of a lot closer to a truck than it is a North American truck. Someone’s taking a payoff for this crap.

  44. Charles says:

Where can I put my 18 ladder?

  45. lee says:

Nice looking but far from truck status. After working in a real truck ( chey Silverado). Maybe a go to town suv. Not a truck.

  46. lee says:

Nice looking but far from truck status. After working in a real truck ( chevy Silverado). Maybe a go to town suv. Not a truck.

  47. Tom says:

Looks surprisingly like the new Ford Explorer that I own. When I first saw it That’s what I thought it was. This is an SUV not a truck!!!

  48. Daniel Thompson says:

I see a nice suv a truck NO

  49. joe Em says:

    Eurotrash a**holes

  50. mike says:

british made crossover = north american truck of the year.

my algebra may not be as good as my 17 year olds but I

Bet you 10 bazillion dollars that thing wont protect you

in a collision like a 2500HD series GMC would. with a

13000 lbs payload and a factory lift. Not a truck you

    brit sniffin wankers!

  51. flyersfan171 says:

someone go get me 10 sheets of plywood and 10 bags of cement in that

  52. debbie says:

it’s a duck, not a truck (remember those old commercials?) the kid wanted a truck, not a duck! lol

  53. That’s not a truck !
I own a sawzall and a set of torches, I can make it a truck !!!

  54. Fvanoly says:

That ain’t a truck, Jethro – it’s one o dem fancy SUV thingies dat dem sissy city slickers drive

  55. baycoast254 says:

    Truck?? What truck?

  56. JDT says:

The band of 50 brain-dead FOOLS who call themselves ‘car’ experts should stick to ‘cars’ and leave the trucks to those of us who KNOW what a TRUCK is!! The REAL truck of the year? …non other than Ford F-250!!!

  57. im right says:

this is by motortrend they know nothing that why i dont buy iy anymore

  58. giffskeet says:

American made is where the company is, not where the parts are put together.

This is not a truck per the American classification and No tow hooks or trailer hitchs is visable

    • miguel says:

have used the range rover over in south America (Gayana Venezuela) on the back woods on rivers and swamps this to me is a very expensive toy neither a truck not a car must admit it is nice to look at, for 50 g I keep my 1500 Chevy 4X4 that will go almost anywhere

    • f. galob says:

Nice “truck” can’t wait to see the back filled with tools and 5 or 6 bags of cement. Hope it has a strong trailer hitch for pulling a concrete mixer.

  59. J.J. Meynardie says:

Back in Nov. we bought our first SUV, a Hyundai Santa Fe. 2010, love it. I didn’t realize we really bought a TRUCK. Like the many others replying to this sham I am at a loss at what you media folks are trying to say. A TRUCK is for hauling large, bulky items that won’t fit in a car or SUV. Our Santa Fe will out haul the LR as far as large items are concerned, we have a friend who has a new LR so we compared space. We won. We beat a truck with a “small” SUV.
Damn ! That’s great. Maybe its really a truck because when I go to buy tires some day I see I’ll have to get TRUCK tires, I did find that to be true. But does it make my SUV a TRUCK ? I think not.
Do you guys get a bonus from LR for picking it as the best “TRUCK” ? Bet your bippy !!!!

  60. Paul says:

Since when is an SUV a truck. This site is not worth navigating to if there’s not going to be a distinction between an actual truck and an SUV.

  61. Jeff says:

nice joke. where is the tailgate. whos in charge of this B.S.

  62. Dennis says:

I guess we were lied to…our Ford F250 manufacturers plate states it was made in the USA. Gee I wonder if the Rover could pull our trailer, carry 120 50 ibs pavers, carry furniture (after all the Rover has 20 cubic feet of cargo space). We pulled a water filled pickup and boat trailer out of the local river without hardly a whimper. We carry bikes, our kayak, you name it.
If the Rover is a truck why does it sport P235 tires? The reviewers chose between what, a BMW and a Honda CRV? Even last years’ choice was inaccurate. None of the vehicles are trucks and the reviewers have no idea what a truck is, nor its intended use.

  63. Hemiman528 says:

Who are the ignorant donkeys that voted the Evoque truck of the year? Lets shovel about a half a yard of dirt or sand in the back! Can I put a livestock rack on it? I want to get paid to vote next year, who were the fools that did this year some city slicker that doesn’t know dung?

  64. Bob S. says:

My son-in-law was an editor for an automotive publication. He would be the first to tell you he knows nothing about cars or trucks. Most of these guys are journalists folks, not mechanics. If you are buying vehicles based on what they are writing, you are in for the ride of your life!

  65. american cowboy says:

If this is a truck, i want to see someone load a front end loader bucket full of gravel in it. i drive a dodge cummins diesel 3/4 ton with an 8ft. bed and can tow a 10 place travelong steel stock trailer fully load with horses or a drop deck trailer with 11 tons on hay on it, and i’d love to see this “truck” do that.

  66. Bob S. says:

hmm…assembled in united kingdom with 50% united kingdom part content. You know,They say that they don’t build televisions in Britain because they can’t figure out how to make them leak oil!

  67. rg daves says:

If that is a Truck, what would you call a Silverado,F-150 or Ram? So, what do i call my Crossover?

  68. Bill says:

I’m from AMERICA–and the only trucks I know of are Chevy, Ford or Dodge. A truck can pull 10,000 pounds +, haul what you need and can take a beating. I see no truck in that photo and I know it can’t do what I just described.

  69. James says:

hmmmmmmmm….agreed Bill. How do I pull my 15,800 pound 5th wheel with that “truck”?

  70. Farmer says:

I liked the comment about how much wood can it haul. From a farmer’s point of view – how many hogs can it haul? A 2011 Ram 1500 can haul a lot of hogs. Hauling hogs with this would be an encounter of the heavy weights – HA!

  71. '06Expedition says:

Am I missing something? I thought a truck was something like an F-series, Silverado, Ram. These SUVs/crossovers aren’t even built on truck frames. Not even the new Explorer is based on a truck anymore.

Proud owner of an American made SUV built on a truck frame.

  72. jessayin says:

I agree that it’s NOT a truck but Nowhere in the article does it say that the F-150 is made in Mexico. It says that the Ford FUSION is made there. I’m jes’ sayin…

  73. mike says:

let’s see United Kingdom, Spain, Japan and one (1)pecent US and Canada considered North America. I thought I passed my world geography way back then in school, must be this new One World Order B*** S***!

  74. JJ says:

I have a ’05 SRT-10 that looks a whole better looking than this Euro overprice sewing machine and half the price of this SUV…and I agree it isn’t a truck.

  75. lee says:

A truck Really Load that thing with a ton of horse manure and a couple of bales of hay, bet it stinks in there for weeks

  76. Tom says:

    What the heck?
This is certainly NOT a TRUCK! SUV, yes, TRUCK, NO, NO, NO!
These people they call judges should look in the mirror and ask themselves: “it this REALLY A TRUCK or is it an SUV or CAR?”
This is a SUV crossover and NOT A TRUCK. A truck has the ability to have stuff loaded in its bed for hauling and the bed is NOT COVERED! Man, let’s get guys and gals from the street and let them decide what is the truck of the year!

  77. Me says:

Truck??? I don’t see any truck!!!! Looks like a station wagon to me!!!!

  78. Michael says:

WHAT a joke….There is no hint of a TRUCK here. I guess Muffy and Tad can go to the grocery store and buy a handfull of wood and place it in the space behind the passenger seat. A Truck would eat that thing for lunch.

  79. JC says:

Yeah so the F150 has its final assembly in Dearborn Michigan and this is better than Mexico? How? Dearborn Michigan has been taken over by Muslims and Islam, look it up! Dearborn Michigan does not even resemble America anymore.

    • TR says:

Get a clue, JC. What a moron…Ever heard of the arsenal of democracy? Any idea what companies formed it or where they’re located? Look that up, genius. Ignorant comments like yours are what gives Americans a bad name and destroy any credibility an argument may carry. Where were your ancestors from?

  80. GL says:

This isn’t a truck. Enough said.

  81. James says:

That is not a truck it is a suv! Was looking for a truck.

  82. Hotrodbolin says:

OK wheres David Copperfield i know he made the F150 Ford or was it the F250 disappear so were did he put it.in its place he put a P.O.S. Bring back the FORD.

  83. GARY SAKAY says:

I HAVE A 4 DOOR SEDAN AWD DOES THAT MEAN MY CAR IS A SUV OR A TRUCK? NOW I’M CONFUSE! LOL! IT’S ALL POLTICAL, YOU GUY’S KNOW THAT. THEY HAVE TO SELL VEHICLE’S. DAM! SEE HOW MUCH THIS (TRUCK) IS? WHAT! THEY CRAZY!! I RADER GET A VET TRUCK FOR THAT PRICE. LOL!

    • Autobuyer says:

To all of you bashers of foreign vehicles, I was a GM buyer as was my dad and grandfather. I stopped buying GM when I got screwed not once, but twice. All of the American makers stink. They put out substandard vehicles and when there is a problem, it is not their propblem it is yours! They sold the vehicle now you get to deal with it. That is their attitude. As far as Ford being mentioned… Got news for you about Ford. They put several companies out of business when the economy tanked a couple years ago with their JIT BS. Oh but sticking their suppliers with product was not the kick in the teeth. Several suppliers had loans on materials to make parts for Ford. When the company couldn’t make payments because Ford pushed back their orders, those companies had to close their doors and then Ford was able to purchase the parts at scrap value…. I am a capitalist, but that is just the worst thing one can do… Not to mention all of the tooling that Ford had went to China. So good luck with your “So Called American Made / Assembled” I was the first in my family to buy a foreign vehicle… Best truck I have ever owned. The dealer is the best I have ever dealt with. Their service dept is opened Mon-Fri 6am – 12 midnight. Good luck finding a Big Three dealer that will do that! I won’t read beyond this. I just think to many people are false believers when it comes to the facts that people want what they pay for. After my last two vehicles with GM they will never see me again. I have 70,000 miles on my current truck and it is still kicking. Both GM’s had issues before 36,000. Oh and I would never buy a Ford after what they did to make themselves look good in a bad economy.

      • Patti says:

Then I hope you don’t mind that no matter where your vehicle is manufactured, the profits go overseas to the country origin. Don’t you people get it? You are supporting foreign companies at the end of the day.

  84. Brian says:

I love it when lefty writers say that we are “more global is scope than ever before”…. what they don’t realize is that while some Domestic cars are made or manufactured outside the U.S. and some foreign cars are made in the U.S., where do you think the profits are going? Do you really think Japan and Korea are manufacturing cars in America to help out our Economy???? I have news for you… all the profits go back home to Japan and Korea. So you can tell yourself it is okay to slap an American flag on the back of your Prius and feel good about yourself since it is all “Global is scope” but you are not helping your country… not even with the American flag sticker you bought (probably from China). Be American. Buy American!

  85. Frannie says:

GMC is a truck that thing is a suv. can someone help them out to tell the differance

  86. Grandpa2 says:

Golly, my afternoon nap must of lasted too long. Mass media now declares that an SUV is a Truck. Someone has been eating, drinking &/or inhaling some pretty potent stuff to actually think that Land Rover has a truck division. Tragically, some people will actually believe that it is a truck.

  87. mike says:

Yea, when did a station wagon become a truck?

  88. todd says:

I think the point is its a range rover, not american, i can just see pulling up at a jobsite in this. My wife woudnt even drive it to get tampons.

  89. Bob Carrera says:

$50,000 for a compact fake SUV that 50 automotive journalists think is also a truck? At which sport does it excel? What utility does it provide? What can it do that a real, $25,000 truck can’t do? I’m betting that, whenever I see an Evoque, it’ll be driven by a gorgeous blonde with 2 carat diamond earrings and ruby red lipstick. Male or female.

  90. Connie says:

too FUNNY, this is NOT a truck!!!!

  91. Bill says:

Looks as though Range Rover copied the new Ford Explorer which is a far better vehicle.

  92. Rick says:

How much did they these guys to say this??

  93. Rick says:

Pay-in money , drinks, vacations. Someone give them the definition of a TRUCK

  94. Ron says:

I clicked on this article expecting to see a truck…you know truck of the year. What truck? All I see is a glorified cross over. It may be a great cross over but it is certainly no truck. Disappointing.

  95. Grundyboat says:

You can mess with a lot of things in America, but as you all see here by the comments. Don’t mess with what made America strong. The TRUCK. Whether your a Ford, Dodge or Chevy affectionato doesn’t matter. A truck is four wheels, a payload and true grit to get the job done. The forerunner to a truck was a wagon used to grow America and forge this great nation. Calling this vehicle a truck is blasphemy. Any way you slice it it can’t perform and do the jobs a truck can do. Even the 6 passenger trucks of today have open payload space, the beef to haul a sizeable trailer, a bulk to suspend the class 3 or 4 hitch from, the clearance to make short work out of nasty terrain and do it in a multi-functional pretty package. This crossover can’t touch the toes of even the oldest most pathetic workhorse truck out there. Give SUV and Crossover their own category so you folks can at least get something right. A truck is a truck is a truck. This is a glorified stationwagon which is a car is an SUV is a Crossover these days. NOT A TRUCK

  96. Hankman says:

Looks like everybody has been incorrect in calling a truck, a truck! According to [http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=truck]an etymologist website, once the little cart got bigger wheels it was no longer a truck.

So, in hindsight of this abomination and misuse the new Range Rover Evoque is by all means a truck. Our present vehicles however, are NOT trucks. I’m not sure – now – what to use as a descriptive word.

As the engine still pulls a separate bed, remember the only connection is the drive train between the cab and the bed, I guess my F-150 is a tow-truck.

Here we go, we need a new word for say, a truck!

  97. Kevin says:

Gotta love it. It would be nice if they actually chose a truck for truck of the year. Automotive wizards I tell ya.

  98. B. Thomas Lewis says:

I am sick of this industry bias against American Auto products. At no level can this be considered objective analysis. We are being lied to, just when the American auto industry produces the finest vehicles in the world. Vote with your wallet, and leave the stupid dreams on the showroom floor.

  99. john says:

Everybody does realize land rover/range rover are terribly unreliable. They look cool they drive nice, but they break a bunch and are not cheap to fix.

    Former Freelander owner (never again)

  100. george says:

Truck ya right must have about as much sense as politians!

  101. Solar Darren says:

“A truck is a motor vehicle designed to transport cargo.” I don’t see that the Evoque is “designed” to transport cargo, looks more like it’s designed to carry passengers. So real trucks don’t get a truck of the year this year and judging by the finalists and last years’ winner, trucks are no longer trucks. I hope the “50 automotive journalists” can take a little time and pick up a dictionary or go online and find out what a truck really is. Congratulations Vehix, you lose more credibility every day.

  102. Rick says:

Sorry, I’m with all the other straight thinkers that do not consider that a truck. A truck has a bed or box behind the cab. Vans and SUVs are NOT trucks.

A North American vehicle should not matter where it is built or where it’s parts come from but where it’s corporate headquarters are. Toyotas are Japanese, Hyundais are Korean and Land Rovers are British. Thanks for building them here and putting Americans to work but they are foreign cars. The bulk profits head elsewhere.

Typical of todays thinking that “they” can redefine anything they want to make it fit their needs at the time.

  103. brad says:

    it ain’t no truck!!

  104. Connie Davis says:

It’s funny, when I saw the caption and just a part of the front-end of this trrrr– I mean trrrr—please help me somebody, I can’t get it out! I had to see what could someone be callin’ a trrrr—-? I finally got the courage to pull up the page—hesitantly. You know, I don’t own a “TRUCK” but have always admired real men who do, because I can tell by the “TRUCK’ that they were goin’ to handle their “bizzness”. Please, a glorified, crossover, I’m not havin’it, let’s not go down like this America.

  105. Nolan says:

Wow, would that thing be laughed off the construction site. Let’s see them put a load of bricks and several bags of mortar mix in that thing and have room left for tools. Definition of a truck must be differant now days?

  106. ken says:

Think Chrysler made first ‘crossover’. “DODGE MAGNUM”, part muscle car, part “Mr. Fix It” station wagon” (for
emergency screen door repair). I worked about 30 years
for a chrysler dealerships, you give me a sawsall and
them there torches and I’ll make you a ‘truck’ out of it.
Don’t know what you could use it for though.

  107. Jim says:

This is not a truck. A truck is a pickup with an open bed. I doubt they have one in Europe.

  108. Scot says:

Everyone, take a closer look at the “truck”. It is a combination of the new Ford Explorer and Edge. Remember Ford used to own Land Rover and I am going to guess that someone from the design team decided to transition into the new holding company for Land Rover that worked for Ford and had access to the design. Sorry the above is not a truck, it is indeed a SUV. The F-150 still outsells all other brands but not to say GM and Chrysler do not have a good truck either.

  109. malinda says:

since when is an SUV a TRUCK last time i looked a truck has a bed on it…. and SUV is a SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE. Just like my Jeep its not a truck its an SUV. put up a real truck of the year!!!!

  110. james says:

these people need to look at a RAM/ford/gmc website. These people obviously cant tell a suv from a truck. I bet if you gave them a carrot and 5 bucks, they would write an article explaining how the carrot is the 2012 fruit of the year

They made 2 major mistakes. First is declaring that the range rover is a truck. They then proceeded to make an even larger fool of themselves by saying that a honda cr-v and an audi x3 are trucks. These are CROSSOVERS!!!! Does this mean i can tow my 30ft trailer with a subaru forester????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When pigs fly, then learn to speak, then take over our planet, then takover other planits in the universe, then all commit suicide will that happen. I am not denying that a range rover is capabul offroad, but there is a reason why 4wheeler magazine named the Dodge Power wagon the 2012 4×4 truck of the year (BTW,if you dont understand what i just said, this range rover is for you). I will definatly not be trading in my 1999 RAM 2500 cummins for this CROSSOVER. Lets see ram=13,000lb towing capacity, range rover=mabey 1,000lb for passengers and that is pushing it.

In my mind, there are two ways to distinguish a truck from a suv/crossover/car. A truck must have a solid rear axle (a front axle proves its a truck more than before but is not neccisarry) and a cargo box in the rear (a topper is fine, i put my dogs in my topper, open the windows and not have to worry about them jumping out, and can still tow my trailer. if i ever need extra space, just 6 clamps and the topper can come off). Yes, i understand this means toyota actualy made a truck (SHOCKER!!!!!!!!). But none of the foreigner can compare to a ford F 650. Thats how we do it in AMERICA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  111. Mr. Waterman-Are you simply ignorant or …..nevermind. So what does your favorite boat of the year look like?

  112. Had to come back a second time to look at this “report”.I really really did read this correctly. What a sad commentary on “modern technical journalism”. Author offers very lame explanation above. He should have just left it alone or made a commitment to learning his subject in the future.

    • Michael Waterman says:

      William,

Thanks for your comments. As mentioned in the second paragraph of the article, the North American Truck of the Year was chosen by a jury of 50 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada who represent magazines, television, radio, newspapers and websites. The Evoque is not Vehix’s choice for Truck of the Year and you’ll notice we consistently refer to the Evoque as a crossover; we are simply covering the story about the North American Truck of the Year.

Please visit our 2012 Truck Buying Guide for Vehix’s recommended trucks. I expect you will find trucks that better match your expectations: http://www.vehix.com/articles/buying-guides/2012-truck-buying-guide—6-vehix-picks

  113. Greg Young says:

Being from Pittsburgh with many relatives formerly employed in the mills, I have always been a union, buy American type guy. I have never purchased a foreign car although I’ve come close to it, because of crappy service or car problems popping up after my 3 year 36,000 mile warranty expired. American car makers need to do more to keep buyers, like offering longer warranties, longer mileage, better service hours. I can understand why the person went foreign. Many of my family members think I’m nuts for still buying American.

  114. BONTHEONE says:

So the Evoque, CR-V and BMW X3 are trucks? Then they should all be restricted from driving in the left lane on highways where trucks are not allowed in the left lane. And on highways where trucks are not allowed at all (Belt Pkwy in Brooklyn)… they shouldn’t be allowed at all. And they should pay higher “truck” registration fees like I do on my Tacoma (Pennsylvania), even though I use it as my car so haul my mother’s wheelchair and her other gear. And while I’m at it, when Subaru decided to classify the Outback as a “truck” based on a ground clearance definition, in order to evade gas mileage regulations, all of the above should apply to the Outback also. Outback in the left lane… I expect to see the police pulling them over and issuing tickets.

  115. BONTHEONE says:

And keep those “trucks” out of the HOV lane!!!

  116. Gdnfjames says:

If you want a real truck get you a Dodge Ram Diesel then you can say you have a T R U C K……..

  117. Eran says:

It looks like they borrowed a lot of ideas from new Ford Explorer, Jeep Cherokee and BMW X5 to put thogether this vehicle, and it looks like the hybrid of all three.

  118. rwfink says:

    Lets see the truck version.

  119. logmark says:

A truck is more than a cab with haulin’ and towin’ capabilities. It’s something that goes to work. It does stuff, and, more importantly, its primary reason for being is to do stuff – to work, to pull, and to carry. Oh, and a truck isn’t afraid of getting scratched up a bit while doing stuff. It doesn’t need a wash every time a splash of mud comes along. Finally, a truck gets you into camp. It carries all your stuff through car-eating holes and knee-deep water far into the woods on narrow two-tracks. I loves having a chainsaw in the back just in case. It’s not afraid of a gun rack or a little blood from a fresh kill. It eats tough like I eat meat. It even looks good with a little rust on it after long years of beautiful service. My guess: these “experts” have been dining too long on dainty foods. Come on you weenies, grab a little bologna on white with mustard – we got work to do!

  120. Muskrat says:

I am not even sure the folks at Top Gear UK would agree with this choice. It just gives them another reason to bust on us Americans.

  121. okidokie says:

Cant wait to take my new Evoque “TRUCK of the year” lol down to Home Depot to pick up 12 sheets of plywood 50 2×4′s and some shingles to build a shed. “NOT”

  122. Silverchief says:

That is the funniest “TRUCK” I’ve ever seen, not a bad looking SUV, but it ain’t a truck, maybe up north it’s a truck, but not down south.

  123. ladolph says:

    what happened too buy american

  124. chezml says:

The Pussifaction of Amercia. We don’t employ amercian people, we don’t buld amercian cars and trucks and we let government tell what we like. Live Free! Gary Johnson 2012

  125. Alex Zoltak says:

Funny how the different terms have evolved.
This is a station wagon, (or an APV or MPV)
Its not a truck. Very misleading to sucker all these folks into believing that just to get us worked up and comment on their stupidity.

  126. Chris says:

Your lengthy explanation of how vehicles are now assembled from parts made internationally has no relevance to the meaning of the words “North American Truck.” The “North American Truck of the Year” is neither. It is not North American and it is not a Truck.

Words have meaning. If you want to be able to choose SUV’s as the winner (yes, including last year’s selection of the Ford Explorer), then change the title of the award. Perhaps you could change the title to the . . .

“North American International Auto Show’s 2012 Best Utility Vehicle Sold in America” Award.

  127. Cedpage says:

Not sure how this SUV earned the title “truck”, but in an economy where people are still losing their homes and unemploment is high ,do the American people really need a $50,000 SUV? And no, the F150 is NOT assembled in Mexico.

  128. Doug Towers says:

what truck? your sadly mistaken. a truck has a 8 foot bed or a fifth wheel. you need to recalculate your votes.

  129. spaceroy says:

Looks like a station wagon to me… Where do you load up your ATV? A yard of mulch? That engine block for your vintage Chevy hotrod? Lets get real… it definitely is NOT a truck!!

  130. MjG says:

how much hay and feed can you get in the bsck of that thing? can you pull a 2 horse gooseneck with it? can you drive it to a work sight full of lumber and tools? can a common hard working person afford to own it? dont think so. its a CAR!

  131. Jack Smith says:

i work on Rovers, am full time repair tech, of all the trucks, Rovers cost more and need more to repair than all the others, god help you when the warranty is up

  132. Frank Paige says:

Nice … if it beat out BMW ,I would expect it run for
a million miles (with proper care & maint) .. seriously !!

There are (expensive, high quality) vehicles already on the road that will easily do 1/2 million tough miles already(with common sense driving of course).

    Congratulations !!

  133. etstretch says:

i used to rant that if it didn’t have an 8 foot bed then it couldn’t be called a truck. you apparently think it doesn’t even have to be a truck never mind have a full size bed.

  134. DR says:

Follow the money! Most likely some heavy lobbying or even worse under the table $ used to sway the vote. Nice car–not a truck.

  135. Tony says:

The transplants? More of the parts on the vehicle are made in America?

The question to be answered is where do the profits go? A US company or a compay outside of the US.

  136. john kelly says:

first off its not a truck. second its not a north american vehicle. let the euros have there own awards. theres nothing isolationist or wrong with celebrating product of our own design and making.

  137. Harry Neuman says:

Another Right Wing misrepresentation … the rules as to whether a vehicle is classified a truck or a car by The EPA were established over 30 years ago… Well before Obama … and auto manufacturers have been playing with those rules to their advantage ever since. At one time Subaru put a couple of plastic bucket seats with seat belts in the bed of a small pickup truck so it could be imported as a car ( I think it was called the Brat)… I’m sure the first traffic accident that killed someone was also Osama’s fault as well … don’t place blame unless you know what you are talking about

  138. Barry Eves says:

Dodge Ram diesel truck? over rated NOISE with drive train PROBLEMS

  139. Godfrey Buquet says:

I have an idea. Fill that thing with a half ton of cement and I’ll do the same to my 1999 F-150. We will strap up for a Tug-of-War pulling contest. I bet that fancy looking thing can’t even move my TRUCK with me hust holding my foot on the brakes. Then, let’s pull. I bet my 5.4 engine will not only pull, it will drag this thing fast enough backwards that you fear to jump out of it. There. Trucking done. Still want to call it a truck? You’ll play hell convincing me and most of the folks who posted on here.

Webster has two distinct definitions of TRUCK covering several categories.
    1. A kind of two-wheeled barrow or low wheeled frame, for carrying heavy articles. 2.An automotive vehicle for hauling loads. 3. A swiveling, wheeled frame under each end of a railroad car.

Now, the second definition and it’s categories and possibly the one the authors used.

    2. Truck. To exchange; barter. 1.Small article of little value. 2.Vegetables raised for market. 3.Dealings. 4. Trash;rubbish.

Seems from the posts that the pick of the presented vehicle came under the second of Webster’s definitions. Category #4.

Oh well. Alls well that ends well. A thought that only congress seems to believe in, whether they are right or wrong. God Bless ye all and God Bless America. Not meant for non-believers.

Have a good old Jeep wrangler, 4×4 through anything off road, run it in 20″ of powder sand on beach while bass fishing NP with stock tires tho you might want to let the pressure down to 12 lbs, I can tell you first hand I have seen these range Rovers up to the frame spinning all wheels stuck as the tide comes in, guess who pulls em out , YUP the jeep. Might look kinda nice but its just another soccer mom social class symbol more than usefull.

  142. Helen says:

What designer drugs are these so called judges on Range Rover in my mind belongs in the car that will be only in the driveways of the rich or those that want you to think they are rich.

  143. Oldlee says:

First, it’s not a truck. Second; this company’s stuff is so unreliable it’s in the shop more than it’s on the road. I have a friend who had one and it was always getting fixed!!

  144. Coben67 says:

    Wow…just…WOW…

I can’t believe the amount of idiots that:

    1. Have little reading comprehension. The article NEVER STATED THE F-150 WAS BUILT IN MEXICO, that was the FUSION!

    2. American vehicles have a poorly built quality reputation and use cheap plastic for their interiors. I own a Dodge Ram 1500 (2001) and the dash is falling in peices because of the poor quality plastic they used and Dodge REFUSES to replace the dash! (look it up, happend to many 2001 owners)

    3. Only recently have Fords quality began to come up slightly. To bad they support the gay agenda by air commercials that have same sex couples in an obvious relationship. Any company should strive to be socailly neutral….whats next an abortion procedure in the back of a F-150? “Got lumber to haul or kids to kill”, the F-150 can do it all!”

    4. I’ll keep buying foreign until “American” vehicles match or exceed the quality and the warranty of foreign. The Hyundai Santa Fe my wife owned, until she rolled it and walked away without a scratch, was excellent in all areas and required very little maintenance. You can’t bear their coverage either, 10 years /100k I don’t think any of the big 3 will stand anywhere near their vehicles after 5-7…they know thats the wear out date!

I love America, but the unions that demand excessive wages and the consumer that is “ok with mediocrity or failure” are the cause of the foreigners beating us out. You have no one to blame but yourself, vote for quality with your wallets!

  145. GITBRAT !! says:

It becomes obvious as to why print media is disappearing. The real problem here and in many other things in THE WORLD is GREED. These writers have to make an income somehow and they need our feedback to prove their worth. Obviously, this vehicle doesn’t qualify as a TRUCK. With that stated Miriam Webster should be gratified that we still hold his defitntions as true. This is also why ,,,,,, I WILL NEVER SUBSCRIBE TO ANY OF THE SO-CALLED AUTOMOTIVE MAGAZINES !! Truck-Of-The-Year ??? Yeah ! My posi-lock rear-end !!

  146. Psiclon3 says:

I find it kind of funny that Vehix is picking this as a Truck and there’s a Motor Trend ad in the corner of the page showing the Evoque as SUV of the Year.

  147. justanobody says:

And this is why the European economy is in ruins! Building sh-it nobody can or wants to afford.

  148. DLancer says:

What kind of lunacy is this? That isn’t a truck!!!

  149. Bill says:

First: An SUV is NOT a truck! Second: When a vehicle is named “____” of the year, it’s probable reliability should be considered as a significant portion of it’s characteristics. Range Rover SUVs have a reliability rating just north of a Hugo!

  150. william says:

as a truck this thing isnt worth a bucket of warm sxxx.

  151. james says:

to all you non believers and anti amercin people who buy shit from across the pond, i have a 1999 dodge ram 2500 with the cummins. I have never had a problem with the 5 speed manual, the engine or the rest of the drivetrain.its at about 210000 miles. Look it up, some rams have been known to last almost a million miles. so BARRY EVES, dodges have had no problems with the manuals, or any other part of the drivetrian. And about the noise, you cant denie that you love that diesel turbo sound and that rumble at idle. those are some of the reasons I LOVE MY DODGE. I say, if its got no sound, its just another plugin appliance for people who arent real “drivers”. i dont care if the new camery has ___ gas milage, and sure as hell dont care that the toyota tundra is made in texas, they are still not american. I dont care if they fall apart on their way out of the lot, i will always buy american. Why? Cause i am not a communist, i am an AMERICAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that the attitude other americans should have.

  152. Harry Neuman says:

Before I retired I drove 110 miles to and from work every day and in the 35 years I made that trip I went through several vehicles. Currently I am driving a 1995 Ford Ranger with just under 300,000 miles on it and it has seldom let me down. Prior to that I drove a Probe to 100k when I gave it to my daughter, and she drove it another 70k before it was in an accident .. and it protected her, I had an Aerostar for over a 100k and gave it to my son who took it to California and used it there, a 2004 Escape that has over 135k on it and still running, two Escorts with 150k on them.. both inherited and driven into oblivian by off-spring, a VW beetle I drove one winter in Michigan and sold to the first person that offered me money for it, a Nissan that I sold at 50k because was coming apart… I can see where you don’t think domestic autos don’t hold up…

Consumers Report … a number of years ago this magazine had an article on a car segment that included the Ford Probe and the Mazda 626… this article ust couldn’t say enough nice things about the 626; however, the Probe was just a marginal car. What they didn’t realize was the Probe and the 626, under the skin, was the same vehicle, made in the same assembly plant on the same assembly line.. Consumers Report made this same error on the Ford Ranger and the Mazda derivative, the Escape and it Mazda derivative, the Explorer 2-door, , and a couple of others… seemed the Mazda logo on the hood change a marginal American made vehicle in to a high quality Japanese vehicle…..
