We’re always looking for ways to help car buyers save money. Whether we’re analyzing the best new car rebates and incentives in our monthly Car Deals articles or helping Vehix visitors find a great price on a used car through our large network of car dealers, identifying ways to save on cars is what we do for fun (yes, we realize we could use some additional hobbies).

Saving money at the pump is another great way to secure savings for the entire time you own your vehicle. Now we won’t try to tell you that SUVs are particularly fuel-efficient vehicles. They’re not. But they’re massively popular and show no signs of becoming any less popular over time, especially when you consider that automakers are rolling out new versions of compact crossovers or SUVs all the time, like the 5 Hot New Crossover SUVs from the L.A. Auto Show that include an updated Ford Escape, a new Honda CR-V and the brand-new Infiniti JX35 that will arrive in stores for 2013.

While large family SUVs generally return between 16-22 mpg in the city and highway, compact SUVs do much better, with the Ford Escape Hybrid returning an impressive 32-mpg in combined driving. We’ve detailed the 5 most fuel-efficient small SUVs for 2012 to help you choose a few that may deliver exactly what you need in your next vehicle.

For many drivers, a small SUV just doesn’t cut it. They need to seat more than five passengers or they need to stow more gear. Often a lot more gear. And you don’t have to be part of a large family for a family SUV to make sense. We know plenty of people who use three-row SUVs to transport their biking team to races or fantasy football team to the neighborhood bar for the annual draft.

We’ve crunched the numbers and created a list of the 5 most fuel-efficient family SUVs. Each of these vehicles boast three rows, decent amounts of horsepower and relatively affordable prices. We’ve included rebates and incentives links for each of the vehicles so you can calculate how much you can save at the pump as well as the dealership.

As always, there are plenty of options to consider when it comes to SUVs. Best of luck in your search.
