Getting ready to negotiate: know your limit
Sometimes discussing prices with a potential buyer gets a tough rap. It doesn’t have to be so difficult. When negotiating prices with a buyer, be sure to understand that most buyers will use a round-about way of getting you to lower the price of your vehicle. Decide in advance if you’re willing to lower the price of your vehicle. If not, make that known to the buyer.
Just like when negotiating to buy a car, have a limit in mind. Set a number that is the lowest amount you would be willing to take for your vehicle and be able to walk away satisfied. Just like when buying, be prepared to walk away from a number that you don't like – it may force the potential buyer to raise his offer if he sees a vehicle that he/she is really interested in walking away.
Attitude check
Remember that potential buyers will also be evaluating you as well as your vehicle. You want to present yourself as an honest, trustworthy and responsible owner – try to think of the qualities you'd look for in a babysitter for your child. Be polite, friendly, listen and try to answer all questions completely. Be calm and in control.
