Several automobiles are priced beyond the means of even the wealthy. These vehicles are rolling status symbols with a financial value that is far beyond the cost of their components. They are machines that represent a rolling fantasy for millions of admiring fans and (in many cases) are more notable than the celebrities they transport.
By now you’ve already scanned the list and perhaps noticed the lack of the Bugatti Veyron (among a few other “hyper” exotics). We tried to be realistic about our vehicle choices and opt for the most exotic and expensive vehicles people can actually purchase. These are production vehicles in which more than 100 units per year are made. They are all sold in the United States. Some of the “missing” cars are so exclusive that even major celebrities have been turned away. Other exotic vehicles are no longer built and we are adhering to late 2008 and current 2009 models.
We would like to point out that a majority of these vehicles are available with options and extras. The prices listed are Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and while a vehicle may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, options and extras can push the price hundreds of thousands higher.
This list constitutes the most exotic (and expensive) vehicles currently sold in the United States.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a bit of a misnomer to some Mercedes-Benz fans. Some see its high price and dominating performance as direct competition for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Indeed, on a race track they would be very competitive with each other, although the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is not quite as exclusive as the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. Nevertheless, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is an absolutely astounding performer. The Black Series uses a more powerful version of the SL65 AMG's 6.0 liter. The Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series has a twin-turbocharged 670 horsepower (producing an asphalt melting 738 lbs feet of torque), V-12. A 5-speed automatic sourced from the SL65 now has a robust manual shift mode and is capable of harnessing all of that torque. The Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is 570 lbs lighter than its SL65 AMG sibling despite being much wider. The enormous fender bulges, redesigned body work and enhancements in aerodynamics are all in an attempt to make the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series a dominant sports car. With 0 to 62-mph times in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 mph, (Mercedes-Benz data) and the ability to out-corner nearly any production vehicle built, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is dominant indeed.
