The term “Cheap Luxury Car” might be considered an oxymoron by some. In many cases the definition of luxury could mean expensive, pricey or beyond the means of the lower classes. This simply is not true as many reasonably priced vehicles spoil their occupants with supple leather, an array of power options, well designed mechanicals, an inviting interior, excellent all around performance and plenty of power.
A majority of the vehicles on this list are based on other platforms, share parts, components, power trains and additional equipment with other vehicles. Normally, automakers try to hide or mask the similarities between one model and another. In many cases, this is a superb way to keep manufacturing costs down.
Yes, cars that sell for under $35,000 will not compete as status symbols with vehicles costing two to five times as much. Many wealthy drivers opt for cheaper, yet enjoyable vehicles. Perhaps that thinking is how some of the wealthy became wealthy. If these less expensive vehicles can pamper the driver and passengers to a high level, why not call them “affordable luxury?”
Although the Volvo S40 is the smallest vehicle on our list, it is nonetheless a very special vehicle. Available in many formats and a variety of trim levels, the Volvo S40 is based on a very flexible platform. The incredibly robust Mazda 3 platform is the basis for the Volvo S40. There are very few components shared by either and the shared technology makes for a safer (yet, somewhat less expensive) small luxury vehicle. There are some who prefer having a smaller vehicle that has all of the kit and luxury of its larger brethren. No one can argue about Volvo’s astounding safety reputation and as the Volvo S40 is extremely safe, luxurious and comfortable, this could be an ideal vehicle for many. The Volvo S40 comes standard with a 168 horsepower (170 lbs feet of torque) 2.4 liter 5-cylinder 5-speed automatic transmission.
Lincoln’s only offering on this list is nonetheless a good one. The Lincoln MKZ has been around for a few years and has improved each year from what was already an excellent start. Based on the previous Mazda 6 platform, the Lincoln MKZ has a completely unique internal and external design. The interior is an excellent blend of stitched leather lining, metal, chrome, and accented surfaces that are very pleasing to the eye. Many have commented on the similarities in certain design elements taken from Lincolns that were built in the 60s. The driving experience is relaxed, yet never lethargic. The interior is comfortable without ever being too fussy and the power is surprisingly smooth to many. Available with an AWD option, the sole power-plant is a strong 263 horsepower (249 lbs feet of torque) 3.5 liter V6 and the sole transmission choice is a 6-speed automatic.
