Yes, the economy is rough and it was a difficult year for trucks. However, the United States is still truck country. There is nothing that can take the place of a full size pickup truck. They can tow, carry and muscle through more today than their older brethren could imagine. Trucks are taking a new path in the American market. Rather than being built for everyone, they appear to be more specific, aiming at a customer’s specific wants.

All of these trucks are available with a variety of 4WD (from manual locking hubs, shift-on-the-fly to fully automatic). Many vehicles’ towing and payload capacities tend to drop when their vehicles are equipped with 4WD. In many cases this is based on the extra weight and drag 4WD systems add to trucks.

Towing ratings for these vehicles range from a scant 2,000 lbs all the way up to well over 24,000 lbs and payload begins at about 1,000 lbs and climbs to over 6,000 lbs. There are several transmission choices. Most full size trucks have options for 4, 5 and 6-speed automatic transmissions. Other trucks offer 5 and 6-speed manual transmissions. There is quite a variety as you will see below. These are the top 10 best selling trucks in America.

10. Chevrolet Avalanche

2008 Chevrolet AvalancheCompletely unique compared with the 2 section (cab and bed) pickup trucks, the Chevrolet Avalanche is a fresh approach to combining a pickup truck and a SUV. Take a Chevrolet Suburban, cut off a portion of the rear 1/3rd roof and window sections, strengthen the chassis with a beefy flying buttress and add a convertible center section that can open the rear seating to the bed (creating a large bed) and you have a excellent compromise. The two rows of seats and the interior is unique to the Chevrolet Avalanche, but shares many components with the Chevrolet Suburban (as does the Chevrolet Avalanche’s power-trains). Engine options are 310 horsepower (with 334 lbs feet of torque) 5.3 liter V8 and a similar 5.3 liter V8 that can burn E-85, this power-plant can produce with gas - 310 hp ( 335 lbs feet of torque), with E85 ethanol - 326 horsepower (350 lbs feet of torque). Chevrolet Avalanche trucks can also get the burley 366 horsepower 6.0 liter (376 lbs feet of torque) V8.
