Many automakers have inexpensive vehicles that deserve recognition. Some vehicles (like the Honda Fit) were priced just above our $14,000 mark. In most cases, the cars we supplied for this list were realistically priced below the $14,000 mark and remain close to that amount even after an option or two is added. Not only are all these vehicles extremely cheap, they get amazing mileage and come better equipped than the econo-boxes of the past. In fact, many of these vehicles will be cheaper than more expensive hybrids in overall costs a few years down the line.

The rankings are not based on cost alone. These are vehicles that one can buy realistically for less than $14,000 and are ranked based on several factors. We ranked this top 10 based on overall build quality, reliability, safety, price and desirability. Some vehicles are left over from the 2008 year and have the same features while other models are so new that we only have basic information available to us at this time.
