These aren't your grandpa's station wagons—forget the wood paneling and way-way-back seats attached to ten tons of kelly green steel. You'd be lucky not to use a whole gallon of leaded gas getting out of the driveway with ol' Betty. Today's most efficient wagons have traded in cargo space roughly the size of Rhode Island for a more sporty look and feel. And if you’re looking for serious efficiency, it’s time to reconsider diesel as your fuel of choice.

EPA re-tests about 10% of vehicle models to confirm manufacturer's results. Your results may vary. Learn more at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/.
10. 2010 Scion xB
Boxy little hatchbacks are suddenly popular again—at least with younger drivers. The xB has received praise for both its interior and exterior. But the 2010 Scion xB (view photos) comes with a significantly more powerful engine that also decreases efficiency from previous years. And when it comes to customization, it’s hard to top the Scion for options. One clever driver even added a full BBQ grill, mini refrigerator and kitchen sink to a 2010 xB. No word on the fuel economy of the barbecue’s propane tank.

9. 2010 Subaru Outback Wagon
Subaru fans might be surprised to find the 2010 Subaru Outback (view photos) so far down this list, but we still see it as a great choice for anyone that might be facing varied terrains and weather conditions. Subaru's standard all-wheel-drive and considerable interior space out-do most of the higher-mileage compact crossovers listed here.

8. 2010 Volkswagen Passat Wagon
The 2010 Volkswagen Passat Wagon (view photos) boasts solid mileage numbers of 22 MPG city/31 mpg highway. Keep in mind that those mileage numbers are based off of running premium unleaded fuel. We don't have confirmed data on what gassing up with regular would do to efficiency or the engine, but suffice to say it's not recommended. The Passat is the way to go if you're a VW fan and need more space than any of the other wagons on this list can offer.

7. 2010 Suzuki SX4
The 2010 Suzuki SX4 (view photos) gives the Kia Soul a run for its money on this list. For just a few thousand dollars more and a slight sacrifice in miles per gallon you gain a bigger engine and widely praised performance. The SX4 also has a nice look and a Sportback trim adds all-weather capability.
