Not surprisingly, our 10 most fuel efficient convertibles start off small—really small, with the smart fortwo and MINI Cooper—and get bigger and buffer as we go down the list. Special recognition goes to the Porsche Boxster and Chrysler Sebring, two cars we never thought we'd see on a list like this.

10. 2010 Volvo C70 & 2010 VW New Beetle Convertible
Two respectable European models round out the list by leaving the flash at home, focusing more on fun, value and a bit of utility. Both the 2010 Volvo C70 (view photos) and the 2010 Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible (view photos) are solid choices for folks that consider a convertible to be an “option” rather than a lifestyle. And don’t forget that the Volvo C70 sports an ingenious hard top that makes this convertible a viable year-round driver even in snowy or cold climates.

9. 2010 Chrysler Sebring
The 2010 Chrysler Sebring convertible (view photos) is more for the practical kind of drop-top enthusiast than the person seeking serious performance. In fact, the 4 cylinder model listed here is much more polite than powerful. Although the 6 cylinder version has a little more pickup, MPG estimates drop to 18 city and 26 highway.

8. 2010 Saab 9-3
Most of the information about the 2010 Saab 9-3 (view photos) is still forthcoming, but not much should be changed from the 2009 version. This Saab convertible is just one of a few on this list that aspires to the luxury-oriented driver. But despite the decent MPG figures, similar models from BMW or Audi might be a better all-around choice—especially given the uncertainty around Saab’s future.

7. 2010 Porsche Boxster
To create such a powerful roadster and also wind up on this list is quite an accomplishment. But Porsche has made the ghost of Ferdinand Porsche proud with the 2010 Porsche Boxster (view photos). MPG ratings are the same for the 3.4 liter engine as the 2.9, so you've got no reason not to go for the full rumble. And what a sweet rumble it is.
