Most Fuel Efficient Trucks for 2010

"Fuel-efficient" and "truck" have rarely been heard in the same sentence. But that's starting to change, thanks largely to GM's effort to bring hybrid designs to something other than weird-looking compact cars. While no one's jaw will drop at the miles-per-gallon ratings offered by the models on this list, it is worth noting the size and power of some of the engines in the top 10 this year. Sure, the 4-cylinder, two-wheel-drive Ranger and Tacoma top the list again, but there are also four V8 models, including the Chevy Silverado / GMC Sierra hybrids that actually outperform the 4-cylinder Tacoma on city MPG. It’s a clear sign that drivers can gain increased fuel efficiency without sacrificing the power that makes many of these trucks perennial bestsellers.

One other note for this year's list: we say farewell to Mazda's B-Series trucks, which had been among the most efficient in past years, but ceased production with the 2009 model year.

Fuel economy estimates are courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA estimates are based on laboratory tests conducted by manufacturers according to federal regulations. EPA re-tests about 10% of vehicle models to confirm manufacturer's results. Your results may vary. Learn more at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/.

10. 2010 Dodge Dakota

Although it’s a decent truck and a solid offering from Chrysler, the 2010 Dodge Dakota (view photos) doesn't win the efficiency prize. It delivers less power with a smaller V6 engine and fewer miles per gallon than the F-150 and breaks even with the Tundra and Ridgeline.

9. 2010 Honda Ridgeline

The 2010 Honda Ridgeline's engine and efficiency stats are strikingly similar to the Dakota, but with one advantage: we like the standard four-wheel drive over the Dakota's rear wheel.

8. 2010 Toyota Tundra

This seems a bit like déjà vu from the top of our list. Although there is plenty to like about both the Ford F-150 and the 2010 Toyota Tundra, Team USA edges out the visiting team again by 1 MPG in highway driving when it comes to mid-size fuel efficiency.

7. 2010 Ford F-150

The 2010 Ford F-150 (view photos) boasts 60 years of history and has been a best-seller for longer than many of us have been driving. The latest generation is among the best, and leads the mid-size trucks in its class with a combined 17-18 MPG despite its 4.6 cylinder base V8. We're still in love after all these years. Can't wait for the hybrid.
