This single-mode hybrid system in the Saturn VUE Hybrid is completely different (internally) from its soon to be released, dual-mode hybrid brethren. The 172 horsepower 2.4 liter 4 cylinder produced 167 lbs feet of torque at 5,100 rpm. There are no AWD options. Still, the excellent traction control system fed through the 4-speed automatic transmission and 6.9 inch ground clearance make the Saturn Vue Hybrid into a capable companion. The Saturn VUE Hybrid achieves a Smartway score.
Air Pollution Score = 7
Greenhouse Gas Score = 8
EPA fuel mileage is 25 city mpg and 32 highway mpg.
The successful design behind the Ford Escape Hybrid FWD (Along with platform-mates the Mazda Tribute Hybrid FWD and Mercury Mariner Hybrid FWD) proves itself once again by providing the top score on our top 10 green SUVs list. The Ford Escape Hybrid is available in either 2WD or 4WD. Both models come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The 2WD version gets the best EPA ratings of 32 mpg combined. The 4WD gets a slightly lower mpg. A gasoline powered 153 horsepower (with 136 lbs feet of torque at 4,500 rpm), 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder is the only engine choice. The gas engine is coupled to a Permanent Magnet AC synchronous motor 330-volt Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) producing 94 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. Regenerative braking (where energy from stopping is fed back to the batteries rather than wasted) is standard. The Mazda Tribute Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrid are closely related mechanically. However, they differ in packaging, exterior design and options. The Ford Escape Hybrid achieves a Smartway score.
