Since the earliest days, cars have woven their way into the fabric of American society. We affectionately bestow our vehicles with names like “Black Beauty” or “Pink Lady” or “Superbad” or “Deloris.” We lovingly wash, buff and wax our cars to ensure they look their best when we go out in public. And we tell stories about our cars that often begin with phrases like “Remember spring break 1996 when we took your car and…” or “I fell in love with your father in your grandfather’s Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme.”
Today we’re celebrating car stories with a look at 5 scary car urban legends. As you likely know, urban legends are stories that sound true or at least possible and even probable. These amazing tales are often attributed to a friend-of-a-friend or your uncle’s brother as the source. Not quite a first-person experience. But close enough. Though you might not remember where you first heard these stories, we’re certain you’ve heard nearly all of them at some point in your life.
Are car urban legends true? Maybe, but not likely. Are they memorable? For sure.

Car Urban Legend #5 - The Killer in the Backseat
The Legend:
A single woman fills up her car at a fuel pump, then leaves the car unlocked to go inside the station to pay for the gasoline. As she leaves and starts walking toward her car, the gas station attendant runs to her screaming that she has forgotten to pay.
The indignant woman turns and yells back at the man for accusing her of stealing. After a brief standoff, the woman walks toward the station attendant who admits the only reason he is yelling is because he saw a man sneak into the backseat of her car while she wasn’t looking and the attendant assumes the mystery man is planning to attack her once she drives away.
The Facts:
According to Snopes.com, one of the leading sites for collecting and preserving urban legends, this scary story began making the rounds in 1967 and persists today in slightly different variations. Sometimes the man (and yes, it’s always a man in the back seat of a woman’s car) is an escaped convict. Sometimes he’s a mass murderer. Sometimes he’s a new initiate into a street gang. But the message is clear: lock your doors when away from your car for even a few seconds and always check the back seat before you drive away from a public place.
