People don’t buy station wagons anymore because a crossover SUV is basically the same thing but with greater ground clearance and a taller ride height. Otherwise, crossovers and wagons are conceptually identical vehicles. We understand why the masses prefer the crossover SUV, which means that the station wagon – once ubiquitous in American suburbs – is now the alternative choice, the mode of transportation to select when one wishes to stand apart from the crowd.
For 2011, there are many excellent wagons on the market. The models selected for inclusion in this guide were rated at the top of their class in J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction studies pertaining to initial quality, overall vehicle appeal, and long-term dependability, indicating that the people who buy them, love them. Also, note that we’ve taken the liberty of lumping five-door hatchbacks into this mix, because even under the strictest of rules they’re only two rear quarter windows away from qualifying.
