Ford is introducing the auto industry's first-ever inflatable seat belts in rear seats on the next-generation Explorer set for production in 2010. Functioning like a standard seat belt, the vehicle's crash-sensing system determines deployment. The belt's tubular airbag inflates quickly and breaks through the specially designed belt fabric. Testing has shown the belt helps distribute crash force energy across five times the body surface area. This minimizes chest and neck injuries—especially in young or smaller passengers.
