2011 Jeep Compass Preview

What It Is:

Since its debut in 2007, the Jeep Compass has always been a bit of an oddball. It wasn’t a real 4x4. It didn’t look very Jeepy. It was based on the same platform and mechanicals as a Dodge Caliber. In short, it wasn’t Jeep enough for Jeep purists. Those criticisms make the redesigned 2011 model an intriguing vehicle. New – and, frankly, more appealing – styling inspired by the redesigned Grand Cherokee is a big improvement. But so is the fact that this Compass is now a Trail-Rated 4x4. All these things make it much more Jeep-like, although we don’t expect the hardcore four-wheel-drive buyer to snatch up a 2011 Compass any time soon. This small crossover remains more car than SUV, with a comfortable ride, upgraded and attractive interior materials and loads of safety features. It won’t convert purists, but it will find its audience among middle-American crossover drivers.

What’s New for the 2011 Jeep Compass:

  • Looks Like a Baby Grand Cherokee – The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a great-looking SUV and a winning design. Place the restyled Compass next to one and there’s a good chance you’ll say, “Hey, that’s a baby Grand Cherokee.” A new hood, front fenders, fascia and headlamps all contribute to the family resemblance. We like the new design and believe Jeep has a winner here that should convert buyers seeking the comfort of a small crossover with, yes, the capability of a true Trail-Rated 4x4 Jeep (if you buy the Freedom Drive II package).
  • First Trail-Rated Compass – Most Compass buyers will choose the car-like ride of the base Compass model or the Latitude trim that features cloth seats and basic amenities. But if you’re game for a little moderate off-road fun, Jeep is happy to outfit your new Compass with the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package that delivers Jeep Trail Rated capability. You’ll gain an inch of ride height, skid plates, tow hooks, fog lamps; in short, everything you need to tumble over some logs or bounce up a rocky path. The Freedom Drive II package is available on all three Compass trims.
  • Two Engines to Empower Drivers – The Compass offers two engines. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder generates 158 horsepower and is standard on the base Compass and Latitude models. A larger 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on the Limited trim (which also features leather and other niceties) but is also available on the base Compass and Latitude models. The larger engine can tow up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped.
  • Attractive Fuel Economy Figures – The 2011 Compass boasts estimated fuel economy ratings between 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, depending on engine, transmission, and whether you opt for four-wheel drive, of course. The most efficient model is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a 5-speed manual transmission. That nets 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Respectable to be sure. But even the off-road model with an automatic transmission manages to return 20 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway when powered by the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine.
  • Priced from $19,995 to $26,696 – You don’t have to break the bank to buy a new Jeep Compass. With pricing starting at a hair under $20,000, this redesigned small crossover is quite affordable. A very comfortable and fully featured Latitude trim is only $27,485.
  • On Sale by New Year’s Eve – The American-built Compass goes on sale in late December 2010.

The Vehix View:

The Compass is a real Jeep now, thanks to the new Trail Rated 4x4 model. That’s big news if you like the look of the Grand Cherokee but can’t quite pony up the over-$10,000 premium for the bigger and, let’s face it, much better Jeep. The Compass’ interior is improved compared to prior years and features Jeep’s new and very attractive and functional steering wheel. Add leather to the mix and you have a nicely appointed small crossover for about $26,000. The small crossover space is growing more crowded every year so it’s a tall order to really stand out, but this 2011 Compass is much more up to the test than the previous version.
